Step by step
- Export your data from ChatGPT and drop the ZIP above.
- Search for the chats that matter (a project, a client, a topic). Leave the search empty to take everything.
- Open Export many chats at once, choose Combined Markdown for Claude / NotebookLM, tick Only chats matching the search if you searched, and download.
- In Claude, create a Project and upload the Markdown files to its knowledge. Claude can now refer to those conversations in every chat of the project.
Tips
- Be selective. Project knowledge has a size limit; a few focused files work better than years of small talk.
- Files are split into parts of up to about 8 MB, so each upload stays manageable.
- Same for Gemini and NotebookLM: upload the Markdown files as sources.
- Memories and custom instructions are not part of the conversation history — copy them by hand from ChatGPT settings.
Frequently asked questions
Can Claude import a ChatGPT export directly?
Not as conversations. You can add converted chats as files to a Claude Project, which makes their content available to Claude in that project.
Will my ChatGPT chats appear in Claude's chat list?
No. They become reference documents for Claude, not new chats.
Is it safe to open my chat export here?
Yes. The file is read locally by your browser; it is never sent to a server. The site has no login and stores nothing about your chats.
